About Advent
Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas and runs to Christmas Eve. Old Church custom held it as a penitential season in which marriages were not celebrated with a nuptial blessing, and in Poland, Italy and rural Spain families still avoid it. Present Catholic law allows a wedding, but asks that it be simple. The result is that December weddings are rare until after Christmas, and the days between Christmas and New Year see a small revival.
