About Dia dos Namorados (Brazil)
Brazil keeps Dia dos Namorados on 12 June, not in February, a date said to have been chosen by an advertiser in the 1940s to boost slow trade, next to the feast of St Anthony on 13 June. St Anthony of Padua is the matchmaker saint: single women set up simpatias, small rites, asking him for a husband, and some tie his statue upside down until he delivers. Couples exchange gifts, chocolates and cards, and a registry office often fills with couples marrying that week. Portugal's Santo Antonio and the festas juninas share the season.
