About Suro, the Javanese month of caution
The Javanese calendar begins its year in the month of Suro, which coincides with Muharram, and the month is treated as sacred and dangerous. Many Javanese families do not hold a wedding, move house or hold a celebration in it, and keep the night of the first of Suro with a vigil, tirakatan, and a procession in Surakarta and Yogyakarta, where the palaces bring out their sacred relics for cleaning. Families choose a wedding day from the primbon, the book that rates days by the birth day of each partner.
