About Singles Day (11/11)
Singles Day began in the 1990s at Nanjing University, where students celebrated being single on the date written 11.11. It became a commercial holiday after online retailers made it a shopping festival in 2009. Mass blind-date events, speed dating and dating apps push matchmaking offers on the day, and some couples choose it for a wedding precisely because it looks like a pair of ones, a symbol of an unbroken couple. Some registry offices see a rush of marriages on 11 November. In Korea the same date is Pepero Day, a gift day.
