Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander wedding ceremony
A wedding in Australia that includes First Nations elements such as a smoking ceremony or a welcome to Country, as chosen by the couple and their Elders.
Also: smoking ceremony, welcome to Country
First Nations peoples of Australia, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, hold marriages that differ across hundreds of nations, and there is no single ceremony. Some couples add a smoking ceremony, with smoke from native plants to cleanse and bless, a welcome to Country by an Elder, and songs, dance, and body or ochre painting. Traditional marriages have also been shaped by kinship rules that say who may marry whom. A couple from outside a community should ask the traditional custodians of the place about what is appropriate, and not take on rites that are not theirs.
