Ala kachuu

The Kyrgyz practice of seizing a woman to marry her, often without consent, which is a crime.

A pattern drawn for this page, not a picture of Ala kachuu.

Also: bride kidnapping, ala kachu, bride capture

Ala kachuu means to take and flee and is the Kyrgyz name for bride kidnapping, in which a man and his friends seize a young woman and take her to his family's home, where relatives pressure her to stay. Some are staged by agreement between a couple, but many are not, and a woman taken against her will can suffer assault and forced marriage. It is a crime in Kyrgyzstan, and penalties were increased in 2021, but it persists, and human-rights groups document it. It is covered here as a harm and not as a custom to admire.

Region: Central Asia and the Caucasus
