Bogadi
The Tswana and Sotho bridewealth, once paid in cattle, which links the two families.
Also: bogadi (Tswana), bohadi
Bogadi is the Setswana word for the bridewealth paid by the groom's family in Botswana and among Tswana-speaking communities in South Africa; Sesotho speakers say bohadi. Traditionally it was cattle, and the bride's family could in turn use the herd to find a wife for a son. Talks are carried out by uncles and elders, and the marriage is regarded as sealed when the agreed cattle, or a cash equivalent, has been handed over or promised. Today the amount and timing are often negotiated to suit the couple.
