Chleb i sol
The Polish greeting in which parents welcome the newlyweds with bread and salt at the door of the reception.
Also: bread and salt (Polish)
Chleb i sol, bread and salt, is a Polish wedding custom in which the parents of the couple greet them with bread and salt when they arrive at the wedding reception, often with a glass of vodka or wine. Bread stands for the wish that the couple will never lack food, and salt for the hardships that life will bring. The couple eat a little, and may then drink and break the glasses by throwing them over their shoulders. The custom, with variations, is found across Poland, Ukraine, Russia and other Slavic countries.
