Hantaran
The gift trays a Malay groom's family sends to the bride, apart from the mas kahwin.
Also: hantaran, mas kahwin, belanja
Hantaran are the decorated trays of gifts carried from the groom's family to the bride's family before a Malay wedding, holding items such as a Quran, clothes, shoes, cosmetics, sweets, fruit and betel. The number of trays is by agreement and is usually odd. The bride's family returns a smaller set in exchange. Hantaran is separate from the mas kahwin, the Islamic gift of the groom, and from the belanja, a sum for the cost of the wedding feast. Families agree these amounts in advance, and many couples now keep them modest.
