Kitchen party
A women's party in Southern and East Africa where the bride-to-be is advised and given household gifts.
Also: bridal kitchen party, send-off
A kitchen party is a gathering of women held before a wedding in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Tanzania and neighbouring countries, where the bride is given kitchen items and advice on marriage from older women, often called aunties or ba shibukombe. It resembles a bridal shower and is often held at a hall with games, songs and a meal. Gifts are household items such as pots and linen. Names differ, such as send-off in Kenya and Tanzania, and the advice is sometimes frank.
