In the laja homa the bride, with her brother pouring grain into her cupped hands, offers handfuls of puffed rice or parched grain into the sacred fire. The offering stands for wishes of wealth, long life for her husband and the family's prosperity. It takes place between the circling of the fire and the saptapadi in many Hindu wedding orders, in Hindi, Marathi, Bengali and Odia homes alike. The spelling differs: laja homa in Sanskrit, lajahoma in Hindi, khoi or lawa in some regional usage.
