Also: enkiama, Maasai marriage

Among the Maasai of Kenya and Tanzania, a marriage is a matter between families and age sets, and traditionally was arranged, sometimes years before. The groom's side brings cattle and gifts, and the elders bless the bride, who is often adorned with beaded collars. In the old rite the bride's father is said to spit on her head as a blessing, though details vary and some families no longer keep them. Young Maasai now often choose a spouse themselves, and child marriage is illegal in both countries.
