Mahari
The Swahili word for the marriage gift, which in Tanzania and Kenya can mean either mahr or bridewealth.
Also: mahali, mahari (Swahili)
Mahari in Swahili covers two related ideas. Among Swahili Muslims on the coast it is the mahr, a gift of money or property the groom owes the bride herself. Among many inland Tanzanian and Kenyan peoples it is bridewealth, often cattle or money, paid by the groom's side to the bride's family. Which meaning applies depends on the community, and some families keep both. The amount is agreed by the elders before the wedding.
