Mandap
The canopy and platform, often covered in flowers, under which a Hindu wedding is held.
Also: mandapa, mantap, marwa, mandav
The mandap is a four-pillared canopy raised for a Hindu wedding, with a seat for the couple and a fire-pit at the middle. It can be of banana stems and mango leaves, of fresh marigolds and jasmine, or of carved wood and cloth. In Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh the word marwa is used, in Maharashtra and Karnataka mantap, and in Gujarat mandav. Setting it up is a family task, and the bride's mother often touches the first pole in a small puja.
