Misaq
The Dawoodi Bohra pledge and betrothal ceremony before the nikah.
Also: mithaq, misak, Bohra pre-nikah
Among the Dawoodi Bohra, a Shia Ismaili community of Gujarat and Mumbai with a large diaspora, the misaq is a ceremony in which the couple, usually separately, confirm their agreement to marry and renew their pledge of loyalty to the community's leader, the da'i. It precedes the nikah by some days or weeks. The bride dresses in a rida, a long two-piece garment, and families exchange gifts. Details of Bohra weddings are largely set by the community's religious authority, and customs vary by family and by place.
