Nikah nama
The written Muslim marriage contract in South Asia, with the mahr and conditions.
Also: nikahnama, nikah nameh, marriage deed
The nikah nama is the paper on which a Muslim marriage in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh is recorded. It names the couple and witnesses, and states the amount and form of the mahr and whether it is paid now or later. In Pakistan and Bangladesh, the standard form also has columns where conditions may be written, including a right for the wife to divorce, and the contract is registered with a local official. Brides and their families are advised to read every column before the signing.
