Poruwa
The decorated wooden platform on which a Sinhalese couple marry.
Also: poruva, poruwa ceremony, Sinhalese wedding platform
The poruwa is a low wooden dais, carved and covered with coconut flowers, banana stems and white cloth, on which a traditional Sinhalese wedding is held. The bride and groom step onto it at the auspicious time, hold hands, have their little fingers joined with a thread, and pour water from a pot over their joined hands in a rite called the pirith nool and water pouring. They exchange rings and betel leaves, and the groom presents the bride a sari. The ceremony is conducted by a person called the Ashtaka reader, and often chanted in the court style of the Kandy region.
