Sagai
The North Indian engagement, in which the couple exchange rings and gifts.
Also: sagaai, ring ceremony, engagement ceremony
Sagai is the engagement ceremony of many Hindu and Sikh families in North India. The couple exchange rings in front of relatives, the bride's family applies tilak to the groom, and the groom's family gives the bride clothing, jewellery and sweets. Some families treat roka and sagai as one event, others as two stages weeks apart. The spelling varies as sagai, sagaai or shagun, and the word is also used loosely for any engagement party.
