Samoan fine mats
Finely woven pandanus mats exchanged between the two families at a Samoan wedding, as the chief form of wealth.
Also: ie toga, ie sa
The ie toga is a fine mat woven from pandanus leaf by women in Samoa, with a long and soft look, which may take months or years to make. At weddings, funerals, title ceremonies and births, the mats are exchanged, with the bride's side presenting fine mats and the groom's side giving food and goods, in a formal exchange called fa'alavelave when it is for a family event. Mats pass down in families and are named. A wedding may therefore involve the whole extended family, both in Samoa and in the diaspora.
