Saukele
The tall conical headdress of a Kazakh bride, ornamented with silver, coral and feathers.
Also: saukelе, bridal headdress
The saukele is a tall, cone-shaped headdress, sometimes more than half a metre high, worn by a Kazakh bride at her wedding. It is made of felt and velvet and covered with silver, gold thread, coral and pearls, topped with owl feathers, and passed from mother to daughter in some families. Its materials and weight vary by region. Many brides now wear a smaller version for a few minutes, with the wedding dress.
