Shabka
The gold jewellery that an Egyptian groom gives his bride at the engagement.
Also: shabkah, shabka gold
Shabka is the gift of gold that an Egyptian groom gives the bride on the engagement, usually a set of necklace, bracelets and rings, bought by his family. The value is agreed in the negotiations before the engagement, and it belongs to the bride. Rising gold prices have made it a difficult part of the cost of marriage for young men, and some families have reduced it. The shabka is separate from the mahr and from the qaima, the list of household goods.
