Trousseau
The clothes, linen and household goods prepared by a bride before her marriage.
Also: hope chest, bottom drawer, glory box
A trousseau, from the French for a small bundle, is the collection of clothes, linen and household items that a bride prepares or is given before the wedding. It has been made in many cultures, such as the Dutch and German Aussteuer, the Italian corredo and the American hope chest, and in Australia, the glory box. In the past, a girl and her mother would embroider linens for years. Today the idea survives mostly in the bridal shower and the registry. In some places a trousseau is part of the dowry, in others a separate gift.
