Bunad
The Norwegian regional costume, often worn by brides, grooms and guests at weddings.
Also: Norwegian folk costume
The bunad is a Norwegian set of regional dress, wool, linen and silk, with embroidered detail and silver jewellery, made in dozens of local styles. It is worn on national day, 17 May, at weddings, confirmations and christenings. A bride may wear the bunad of her home district, with a crown and silver brooches, as an alternative to a white dress. A bunad is costly and is passed on in families. Rules about the right details are taken seriously by some, so many people consult a bunad adviser.
