Dragees
French sugar-coated almonds given to guests at weddings and baptisms.
Also: dragées, sugared almonds (French)
Dragees are small sugar-coated almonds, popular in France as favours at weddings, baptisms and communions. They are coloured white or pastel for weddings, and are often placed in small boxes or tulle bags with the couple's names. Verdun and Paris have known confectioners. The French dragee shares its roots with the Italian confetti and Greek koufeta. They are meant as a sweet start to married life, and may also be given to the couple's guests by the groom's mother, or passed round at the table.
