Koufeta
Sugared almonds given to guests in Greece and Cyprus, wrapped in groups of odd numbers for luck.
Also: koufeta (Greek), boubounieres
Koufeta are sugar-coated almonds, usually white, given to wedding guests in Greece and Cyprus, tied in tulle in an odd number, often five, which cannot be divided: a sign that the couple should stay undivided. The almond is bitter and the sugar sweet, and the pairing is read as a reminder that life has both. Boubounieres is the name for the small gift packages in which they are often placed. They are also given at baptisms. The Italian equivalent is confetti.
