Garter
A band worn by the bride on her leg, removed by the groom and tossed to the unmarried men.
Also: garter toss
The garter is a band, often lace, worn on the bride's leg, which the groom removes at the reception and throws to the unmarried men, in the same spirit as the bouquet toss. Medieval accounts describe guests rushing the couple's bed to take the bride's stocking for luck, and the garter replaced it. Many modern couples find the garter toss awkward and leave it out, and some brides keep it as the something blue. It is mostly a custom of North America and the British Isles.
