Ghunghat
The part of the sari or shawl drawn over a bride's head and face.
Also: ghoongat, ghunghta, dupatta veil
Ghunghat is the veil that married women in much of North India, Rajasthan and Haryana draw over their heads, and in rural areas the face, in the presence of elders and the husband's male relatives. At a wedding the bride is brought in with her face veiled, and the groom lifts the veil after the ceremony, in some families only in private. Its meaning is modesty and respect to the husband's family. The custom is fading in cities, and women's organisations have campaigned against it as a restriction.
