Shūgi-bukuro
The cash gift Japanese guests bring to a wedding, in a special envelope.
Also: goshuugi, wedding money gift, shugi-bukuro
Goshugi is the cash gift given by a guest at a Japanese wedding. It is put in a white and gold or red and white envelope tied with mizuhiki, a cord with a knot that cannot be undone, which stands for a marriage that does not end, and handed over at the reception desk with both hands. New, crisp notes are used, and the amount is in odd numbers by custom, with 30,000 yen common for a friend or colleague, and amounts with four and nine avoided. The couple return a smaller gift, hikidemono, to each guest.
