Yuinou
The Japanese exchange of betrothal gifts between two families.
Also: yuino, betrothal gift exchange
Yuinou is the formal exchange of engagement gifts between the families of the bride and groom in Japan, usually followed by a meal. Traditionally the groom's family brings a sum of money, a kimono fabric or other gifts and the bride's family returns a gift of about half the value. The gifts are arranged in a set of nine, with wrapped cords, mizuhiki, tied in a design of a double-ended knot, and some regions have specific items, such as dried bonito or a long hemp. Many modern families keep to a meal and ring exchange instead.
