Chinese pre-wedding customs
The Chinese betrothal gifts sent by the groom's family before the wedding.
Also: guodali, betrothal gifts, da li
Guo da li, passing the great gifts, is the formal presentation of betrothal gifts in a Chinese match. The groom's family sends the bride's family a series of gifts, which in a traditional set include cakes, tea, jewellery, dried fruit, a roast pig or its equivalent, and a sum of money, the pin jin. In return, the bride's family gives back part of the gifts. The number, content and size depend on the region and family, and in southern China the exchange is most elaborate. Some families now agree a simplified list or send a single cash gift.
