Kebaya
The fitted blouse and sarong worn by brides and guests in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.
Also: kebaya, baju kebaya, kebaya kutubaru
The kebaya is a fitted, often sheer or lace blouse worn with a batik or songket sarong, or a long skirt. It is worn by women in Java, Bali, Sumatra, Malaysia and Singapore and by Peranakan women, and is the usual dress of an Indonesian bridal party and a Javanese bride. The design varies: the Javanese kebaya is closely fitted with a velvet or silk lining, the Malay kebaya longer, the Nyonya kebaya embroidered at the hem. In 2024 Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Brunei jointly had the kebaya inscribed on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage.
