Paes ageng is the grand style of makeup for a Javanese bride from the courts of Yogyakarta and Surakarta, in which the bride's forehead and temples are shaped with black paste into curved patterns, called paes, and edged with gold. Her hair is set in a bun with jasmine strands and gold ornaments, and she wears a long kemben and a batik cloth. The patterns are said to protect and to add beauty, and each court has its own style, including the style attributed to the Mangkunegaran house of Solo. The makeup takes hours and is done by a specialist.
