Ketubah
The Jewish marriage contract, signed by two witnesses, that sets the husband's obligations to the wife.
Also: ketuba, ketubot, Jewish marriage contract
The ketubah is the Jewish marriage contract, written in Aramaic in the traditional form, in which the groom commits to support his wife and sets out a sum due to her if the marriage ends. Two witnesses sign it before the ceremony, and it is read aloud under the chuppah. Many couples have a ketubah beautifully illuminated, framed and hung at home. Different movements have their own wording: some Conservative, Reform and Reconstructionist versions are in plain English or Hebrew and reciprocal, and a Sephardi custom is for the ketubah to be decorated by artists. The plural is ketubot.
