The chuppah is a cloth canopy held on four poles, under which a Jewish couple stand for the wedding ceremony. It stands for the home the couple are to share, open on all sides like the tent of Abraham and Sarah, which welcomed guests. It may be a prayer shawl, a quilt made by the family or a new cloth, and it can be freestanding or held up by friends. The Hebrew word is chuppah, spelled huppah, chupah and chuppa in English.
