A kundali is the horoscope drawn up from the time and place of birth. Families that follow astrology have the charts of the boy and girl compared by a priest, who scores them on a standard of eight to ten categories, the gunas, out of thirty-six in the north Indian system, and the porutham in Tamil Nadu. Matching is also used to fix the date. How strictly a family follows it varies a great deal, and many couples today meet first and have charts checked afterwards.
