Also: nischayathambulam, nishchitartham, Tamil engagement
Nischayathartham, also written nichayathartham, nishchitartham or nischayatambulam, is the engagement of Tamil and Telugu Brahmin and many other families. The two families exchange plates of betel leaves, areca nut, fruit, flowers and turmeric, and read out a lagna patrika, the written agreement fixing the date and time of the wedding. The couple may exchange rings. The names differ by language and community, and the rites around it are decided by the family priest.
