Laavaan

The four hymns of the Sikh wedding, read as the couple walk around the scripture.

A pattern drawn for this page, not a picture of Laavaan.

Also: laavan, lavaan, laavaan

The lavan are four verses composed by the fourth Sikh Guru, Guru Ram Das, that are the heart of the Sikh wedding. After each verse is read and sung, the couple stand and walk clockwise around the Guru Granth Sahib, the groom leading with the bride holding his palla, the scarf. Each of the four rounds is understood as a stage of the soul's union with God. The word is spelled lavan, laavan or laavaan. When the fourth round ends, the marriage is complete.
