Milni
The meeting at the gate in which the two families greet each other and exchange garlands and gifts.
Also: milan, milani
Milni means meeting. When the groom's baraat reaches the wedding venue, the fathers, uncles and elder relatives of the two families greet each other in matching pairs, embrace, garland each other and exchange gifts of cash, cloth or sweets. The bride's side often gives the groom's side a sherwani, a shawl or a ring. It is a moment of ritual courtesy between two families who are about to become one, and in Punjabi weddings it is often followed by teasing songs.
