Also: lovespoon, llwy garu

A love spoon, llwy garu in Welsh, is a decorated wooden spoon carved from one piece of wood, traditionally given by a suitor to the woman he hoped to marry. The oldest dated Welsh examples are from the seventeenth century. Carved symbols include hearts for love, wheels for support, keys for a home, and chains for being together. Today love spoons are given at weddings, anniversaries and births, and sold as a Welsh craft. Spelling is love spoon or lovespoon.
