Maid of honour
The bride's chief attendant, who helps her and often gives a speech.
Also: matron of honour, maid of honor
The maid of honour is the bride's chief attendant, usually a sister or close friend. She helps with the planning and the dress, holds the bride's bouquet during the vows, and signs the register as a witness in some places. A married woman in the role is called the matron of honour. The American spelling is maid of honor. She often gives a speech at the reception, and organises the hen party or the bridal shower with the bridesmaids.
