Bridesmaid
A woman or girl who attends the bride at the wedding, often in matching dress.
Also: bridesmaids
A bridesmaid is a friend or relative who attends the bride before and on the day, helps with the planning, and stands near her in the ceremony in a dress usually chosen to match the others. In the West, the bride may choose any number from one to a dozen. The role is said to descend from Roman custom, in which ten witnesses wore the same clothes so that evil spirits could not tell who the bride was, though this is hard to prove. The flower girl is a young attendant who scatters petals.
