Melse

The Ethiopian and Eritrean wedding at the groom's home, held after the wedding itself, when the bride is welcomed.

Also: melsie, melse (Ethiopian)

Melse is a celebration among Amhara and other highland Ethiopians held at the groom's family home, a few days after the main wedding. The bride is welcomed by her new in-laws, and food, drink and dancing continue for the village or neighbourhood. In some places the bride's family comes along, and the occasion is also a chance for the two families to get to know each other. Spellings include melse and melsie, and the details vary by region and by how formal the wedding has been.

Region: Sub-Saharan Africa
