Ponnu paarkal, bride seeing, is the first formal meeting in a Tamil arranged marriage. The boy's family visits the girl's home, with fruit, flowers and sweets, and the girl serves coffee or tea and sweets and talks with the family. If both sides agree, they go on to compare horoscopes and exchange betel leaves and coconuts. Today the boy and girl often speak alone, or meet through an app first. Variants are pen paarkkal and ponnu paakkum.
