Marriage and wedding customs in the Philippines
The Filipino visit in which the groom's family formally asks the bride's parents for her hand.
Also: pamamanhikan, pamanhikan ceremony
Pamanhikan, from a word meaning to go up the stairs of the house, is the meeting in which the groom and his parents visit the bride's home, bring gifts of food and ask her parents for consent and to agree on the wedding date and cost. It is usual in Tagalog families and widely observed across the Philippines. A shared meal follows, and the families may argue amiably over who pays for what. The ceremony is sometimes called pamamanhikan, and in other Philippine languages there are local equivalents.
