Polterabend

A German eve-of-wedding party where guests smash porcelain at the door of the couple for luck.

Also: Polterabend (German)

Polterabend is a German custom held on the evening before the wedding, in which friends and neighbours bring old porcelain and pottery and smash it on the ground by the couple's door. The couple sweep up the pieces together, which is said to show they can work through trouble, and the noise is thought to scare away evil spirits. Glass is traditionally not broken, as glass breaking is held to bring bad luck. The word is also used for the party itself, and similar customs are found in Austria, Poland and Denmark.
