Sangeet
An evening of songs and dance held before an Indian wedding, once for women and now for everyone.
Also: sangit, ladies sangeet
Sangeet means music. Traditionally the women of the bride's house sat with a dholak drum and sang teasing songs about the groom's family, rehearsing the songs they would sing at the wedding. Today it has grown into a stage show, with choreographed dances by cousins and friends from both sides, a DJ and a dinner. It is most common in North Indian and Punjabi weddings and has spread to families across India and the diaspora, often held the night before the ceremony.
