Tabua
A polished sperm whale tooth, the most valued gift in Fijian ceremonies, including weddings.
Also: whale tooth, tabua (Fijian)
The tabua is a whale tooth, polished and often strung on a cord, which is the most honoured presentation in Fiji. It is given and received at weddings, funerals, chiefly installations and to ask for a favour or settle a dispute, and the receiving of a tabua carries a duty to respond. It is presented with a speech. In some weddings the groom's side offers one to the bride's family. Today tabua are in limited supply, and the trade is regulated.
