Tarantella
A fast southern Italian folk dance, played at weddings with tambourines and accordions.
Also: tarantella napoletana
The tarantella is a family of dances from southern Italy, in fast six-eight time, often with tambourines, castanets and accordion. In the south and in Italian communities abroad it is danced at weddings, by couples or in a circle, with guests joining in as the speed grows. Different forms exist in Naples, Calabria, Sicily and Puglia, with Puglia's pizzica linked in older tales to the bite of the tarantula spider. At weddings it is a joyful dance for all ages.
