Also: thaali kettu, mangalya dharanam, tying the thali
Thali kettu, tying the thali, is the central act of a Tamil and Malayali Hindu wedding. At the muhurtham, the groom ties the thali, a gold pendant on a yellow thread or chain, around the bride's neck, with three knots, in many families the last two tied by his sister. In Telugu homes the same act is mangalya dharanam, and in Kannada homes mangalya dharane. Drums and the nadaswaram play and the guests throw rice or flower petals. The pendant's design differs by caste and community.
