Oonjal, Tamil for swing, is a ceremony of the Tamil and Telugu wedding in which the couple sit side by side on a decorated swing while the women of the family sing and pass round them lamps and balls of rice coloured red and white, to remove the evil eye. Milk and banana are fed to the couple. It follows the main wedding rites, and in Telugu homes goes by names such as dolotsavam. The swing recalls the love-play of the deities Krishna and Radha.
